A ceasefire agreement in Gaza came into effect on Sunday, January 19th.
While still very fragile, this step marks a crucial moment in the war on Gaza, which has been lasting for more than a year.
We call for the the respect of international humanitarian law at all stages of this agreement and that the ceasefire becomes truly permanent.
"The reconstruction will take years". Giovanna Fotia – WeWorld Country Representative in Palestine – talks about the situation on the ground.
As for the humanitarian response - our work - key changes are still needed. To support those affected by 15 months of bombings, resources and swift actions are needed. As of today, the conditions of the population in Gaza remain dire: displacement, low temperatures, a lack of access to necessities, and prolonged suffering.
We are continuing to support people in Gaza, by providing access to water, food, hygiene kits, and by ensuring that children can have moments of relief where they can play.
We call for immediate actions to ensure that the necessary humanitarian aid reaches the population.
“It is impossible for me to find the words to express the pain, despair, sense of helplessness, and fears that our colleagues in Gaza have reported over the last 15 months. We hope that this ceasefire will be lasting and that it will allow us to continue working to improve the living conditions of a population who is currently without a home, access to healthcare, water, food, education... everything.”
