On March 8, 2025, the Sikiliza Sauti Yetu: Dunia Inaita! project conducted a major clean-up at Diani Beach, Kwale County, Kenya.

The activity was done with the support of the European Union and in conjunction with WeWorld and different community groups, such as the Diani Youth Beach Cleaners and Mwakamba Beach Management Unit (BMU).

Sikiliza Sauti Yetu: Dunia Inaita! (SSY) is an EU-funded project aimed at strengthening the capacity, voice, and civic engagement of youths (influence), with emphasis on environmental protection actions and climate policy debates on climate adaptation at national and local levels.

This impactful event aimed to combat the growing issue of pollution along Kenya’s coastline —threatening marine life, tourism, and public health and safety. The initiative thus helps safeguard the delicate balance of coastal ecosystems. The clean-up involved three key activities:

  • Beach cleaning: volunteers removed litter, plastics, and other debris from designated areas.
  • Waste management awareness: participants were educated on pollution’s impact and the importance of responsible waste disposal.
  • Sorting and Disposal: Sorting collected waste for recycling or safe disposal.

The activity represented a powerful demonstration of youth leadership in environmental conservation. Equipped with gloves, trash bags, and unwavering determination, the participants cleared large amounts of plastic and debris from the shoreline.

Beyond collecting waste, the event served as a powerful awareness campaign to educate the community on the impact of pollution on marine ecosystems and public health. The youth-led discussions emphasized the importance of responsible waste disposal and the urgent need to transition to sustainable alternatives.
